As a man there are certain things in life you take for granted, your health being one.
As much as you want to be there for those you love and provide for them, you leave it to fate to decide if you actually will be.
That means you go through life not knowing if a disease or condition has taken root in your body, diseases and conditions which if detected early could be treated before they become a serious problem.
But most men do not take the time to go to their doctor.
Those aches and pains you experience are usually attributed to some activity you engaged in, or that headache that won't go away is blamed on stress and finally being constantly tired is blamed on not getting enough rest.
You make all the excuses not to go to see your physician, "I don't have the time" or "There isn't anything wrong with me" or "I feel fine" or "It'll go away in a couple days anyway" and finally "Oh I'll feel better tomorrow".
But the main reason why most men do not see their doctor is mainly due to fear.
  That's right fear.
Men do not want to hear that something may be wrong them.
That fear stems from the fact that an illness means that you can't go to work, or giving up something you love to do, or not being able to provide for your family.
You need to let go of that fear, according to the Center of Disease Control (CDC) the top five diseases and conditions but are not necessarily the top five leading causes of death in males of all races and ages are as follows:
  1. Heart Disease
  2. Cancer
  3. Chronic lower respiratory diseases
  4. Stroke
  5. Diabetes
Gentlemen, all of the above can be easily treated and in some cases avoided if they are detected early.
High cholesterol and high blood pressure can lead to heart disease or stroke which is why you need to have your cholesterol and blood pressure checked to make they your levels are where they need to be.
Most of you don't know that you have high cholesterol or high blood pressure because you do not see your physician often enough, and guys the 50 cent diagnostic machine in the Wal-Mart pharmacy does not count! Cancer can be deadly, and comes in many forms from various causes and can take hold at anytime but most cancers can be effectively treated with early detection.
The main cause of chronic lower respiratory disease is smoking, if you smoke an annual physical is probably a good idea.
I know you don't want to hear for the millionth time that you should quit but think about the alternative, smoking is also one of the leading causes of cancer and by changing your lifestyle now will greatly reduce the risk of developing a serious condition later whether it is a respiratory condition or cancer.
Diabetes can also be triggered at any point in your life.
If you have a family history of this condition it's advisable to get checked out every once in a while to make sure this does not begin to manifest itself.
Now the above are probably reasons for you NOT to go see your physician.
Certainly being told that you contracted any one of the above would play into your worst fears.
But by not having a periodic examination you risk not knowing if one of these diseases and conditions is developing within your body.
In most cases you will not know until they become critical or worse.
As far as the excuses go, if you don't have the time, make the time because it will take less time than if you have something serious; if there is not anything wrong with you, still go your physician to make sure there isn't; if you feel fine, good then you shouldn't have anything to worry about when you do go see your doctor; if you think it will go away in a couple of days, confirm it by seeing your doctor if only to be sure; and finally you may not feel better tomorrow.
The main reason for seeing your physician is to assure yourself that you are fine, that you do have years of healthy living ahead of you and that you will be there to see your children grow and be there to see their children.
If you don't go see your physician for yourself then go for those who care about you.
Get over the fear; it will not be as bad as you think!
