A Winston-Salem triathlete who was riding her bicycle in Summerfield was struck by an SUV last week. She has died as a result of her injuries. The case has been handed over to the Guilford County District Attorney's office. It is not clear if the driver of the vehicle has, as of yet, retained a lawyer.

Thirty-eight-year-old Katherine Shubert of Winston-Salem was riding her bicycle in Summerfield as part of her training as a triathlete. Near Bunch Road, she was struck by an SUV and thrown off of her bicycle. Emergency personnel transported Shubert to Moses Cone Hospital in Greensboro. According to North Carolina Trooper Greg Ingram, Shubert died at the hospital as a result of her injuries.

The driver of the SUV said that the sun blinded her and that she never even saw the bicycle rider next to her. The driver has not been charged, and the case has bee handed over to the DA's office. Shubert's family has asked that memorial contributions be made to Yield for Life, the organization founded by professional bicyclist David Azbriskie after he was injured by an SUV in a bicycle accident. Its mission is to educate motorists about the right of bicycle riders to share the road with motor vehicles.

Sadly, a bicycle accident involving a motor vehicle often results in death. It remains to be seen whether the Guilford County DA will pursue charges against the driver of the SUV in the Shubert case, but in many bicycle accidents, it is the driver of the motor vehicle that is at fault.

When the accident results in injury, the victim can pursue compensation with the help of a personal injury lawyer. A lawyer in the Winston-Salem area will be familiar with area roadways and with all of the laws, rules, and regulations that would apply in a bicycle accident case. Most importantly, a personal injury lawyer aggressively pursues all avenues of compensation from all responsible parties whether they are other drivers or third party entities that bear liability for the accident.

Because injuries from a bicycle accident can be so catastrophic, a bicycle accident lawyer in Winston-Salem will help to ensure that all necessary medical tests are performed to determine the extent of all injuries. If you have been injured in a bicycle accident, a bicycle accident lawyer in Winston-Salem will work tirelessly to make sure that you get the medical treatment to enable the best recovery possible.
