The Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease This is the longer, medical term for acid reflux disease, usually called as GERD.
What happens with this condition is that the contents of your stomach are forced back into your esophagus.
This is the part that connects your throat and your stomach.
Usually, the pressure coming from the esophagus is enough to prevent this.
However, there are instances when the pressure of the stomach becomes stronger, resulting in reflux.
What Causes Acid Reflux? This happens when the lower esophageal sphincter malfunctions.
It is a valve which allows the flow of food to go one way from the esophagus down to the stomach.
There are two things which could cause this malfunction - aging and eating certain food.
Aging weakens this valve because of the wear and tear that it goes through.
It moves and works every time you swallow, so it's a very used part of your body.
This is a factor which you simply cannot avoid.
However, for the other causes, you have a chance.
How You Can Prevent Acid Reflux? There are certain kinds of food which might cause acid reflux.
Needless to say, avoiding them when you are already experiencing stomach discomforts would help prevent the reflux.
Generally, the kinds of food that result in acid reflux are chocolate, peppermint, and caffeinated and alcoholic beverages.
These foods are usual mainstays of a regular person's diet.
It looks hard to give these up but you have to try.
Would you rather have acid going back up from your stomach? However, the case differs for each person.
It's a matter of finding out which of these foods causes the acid reflux.
You usually won't have to give up all of these.
You might not even have to give up one, as the cause might be a different kind of food entirely.
Is Acid Reflux Curable? This is caused by having too much acid inside your stomach.
The way to counteract this is through neutralizing the acid.
Too much acid inside you creates the pressure which forces the acid back up to your esophagus in the first place.
There are many medicines in the market today to cure this problem.
However, most people would be more comfortable if the remedy that you would use would be natural.
Thankfully, there are also a lot of natural remedies already available in the market, accessible to the general public.
One of the most common remedy is a glass of milk.
It has the ability to neutralize acid thus prevent reflux.
Teas such as lavender and peppermint are also good remedies for too much gastric acid.
There are also surgeries and devices which would help cure acid reflux, but these are usually reserved for the more serious cases.
Natural remedies would do at first to cure the acid reflux.
Acid reflux is a very painful condition which needs to be prevented or cured right away.
It is very dangerous in the long run, and understanding it is the first step towards preventing this condition.
