Baby Slings and Wraps - Their Benefits

101 26
Baby slings and wraps are perfect for carrying around your little one, whether you are going for a walk, doing the shopping, the housework or just being out and about. They are generally suitable for babies from birth onwards and are adjustable in size to fit every mum and dad. Baby can be positioned easily in the foetal position (which supports the neck, essential for the newborn), curled up snugly and close to the parent, where the baby is calmed in a snug womb-like environment. You generally just slip it on, pop in your baby and you're ready to go.

Some other reasons for carrying your baby in this way are:

Sleep:

The stimulation of movement, as well as the snug hold close to mom or dads body promotes sleep. Evidence shows that babies carried in a sling during the day, then sleep better at night. When the newborn baby falls asleep in the sling, he or she can easily be put down still asleep in his or her cot. As they get older, the sling can be used out of the house during outings.

Calm:

There is overwhelming evidence that young babies, carried close to their mothers are much calmer than babies who are not. Baby slings often mimic the calming environment of the womb. Being rocked, the snug feel of the sling and the sounds and heat of the mother's body help to calm the baby.

Convenience:

Looking after a baby, as well as being able to get on with daily chores is often a balancing act. Slings keep the baby content whilst freeing up the mother's hands. The convenience goes as far as allowing a mother to breastfeed discreetly whilst carrying her baby.

Please note however, that parents must take care when bending or leaning forward and should keep a close eye on very young babies to ensure they remain in place and are able to breathe freely. Also, when you're wearing a sling or carrier, don't forget "TICKS" i.e.
  • Tight
  • In view at all times
  • Close enough to kiss
  • Keep chin off the chest
  • Supported straight back

Very young babies need to be watched closely, especially if there's a danger of them changing position due to the constant movement. Mothers tend to be very aware of their babies on a subconscious level anyway. Having taken all necessary precautions, enjoy having your baby close and the whole bonding experience, enhanced by baby slings and wraps!
