How to Calculate the Dow Jones Average
- 1). Determine all the companies in the DJIA. This is available through the Dow Jones website with registration only; however, you can access through Barron's free of charge. Obtain a price for all the stocks in the DJIA.
- 2). Determine the Dow Divisor. This is also available through the Barron's website at the top of the page. Go to the Dow Averages Hour by Hour Performance & Volume available online and look to the right of "30 INDUSTRIALS." For example, the divisor may be 0.132319125.
- 3). Find the sum of all prices obtained in Step 2; that is, all 30 companies in the DJIA. You can also get this information from the sources sited in Step 2.
- 4). Calculate the DJIA. Divide the sum of all 30 stocks by the current Dow Divisor.
