The Smoker"s (Unpleasant) Odour

Smokers have a unique body odour.
Unique and unfortunately for the ex-smoker it is extremely unpleasant.
Smokers on the whole don't really understand why the smell of cigarette smoke is so offensive.
Why would they? Most smokers simply aren't aware of the stale odour that surrounds them every hour of every day.
It is an odour that remains with them even after they put out their last cigarette.
Smokers suffer from a suppressed sense of smell which is actually one of the long term effects of smoking cigarettes.
The smoker's odour is an unfortunate consequence of smoking cigarettes but a smoker doesn't really experience it.
Many ex-smokers experience an enhanced sense of smell when they stop smoking.
After years of being suppressed the senses are rejuvenated.
The sense of smell in particular is reborn and in simplified terms nice pleasant odours become more pleasant and nasty unpleasant odours become more unpleasant.
Cigarette smoke falls into the nasty unpleasant category.
Smokers live inside a bubble blissfully ignorant of the offensive smell generated by just one cigarette.
Worse still can be the lingering smell of stale cigarettes on the smoker's breath.
Think of halitosis with attitude and you might get somewhere near.
It is a strange odour omitted by a smoker, very unpleasant and quite hard to describe especially to someone who smokes.
People who smoke cigarettes become accustomed to the smell and no longer think of it as offensive.
It is a smell that they get used to over a long period of time.
Why do so many ex-smokers complain about the smell caused by cigarettes when they themselves were once smokers? Here within lies one of the biggest conundrums associated with smoking.
Of course the answer only becomes obvious when a smoker quits the habit for good and makes the transition from smoker to ex-smoker.
Only then do they realise just how repulsive a smoker's odour can be.
