Proper Brush Maintenance and Online Shopping

Online shopping for brushes can be quite tricky, especially if a person isn't familiar with the brand.
Although brushes have to abide by certain size standards, many times they are quite different.
Another thing that a person needs to keep in mind about brushes is that they have to be properly maintained.
Otherwise, they will be ruined very quickly.
Being an artist is not an easy job, since there are a lot of things that need to be considered.
Online shopping saves time.
The internet can provide a customer with almost anything.
However, when it comes to painting and brushes, a person may end up being disappointed.
The reason for that is the merchandise does not match its size correctly.
Every company that manufactures brushes has a slightly different way of doing things.
If a person knows a company and has used their brushes, then it will not be a problem to order them again online.
If he or she isn't familiar with their sizes, getting something that is not useful could happen.
The same is true for purchasing all types of art supplies that are subject to such minimal, yet important differences.
Once the artist has a clear understanding of which products he or she likes, shopping online will end up saving money and time.
Properly maintaining the brushes is also very important.
This way a person will ensure that they will last as long as possible, and that they will create beautiful lines and strokes.
The first step to cleaning a brush is wiping it off with a tissue.
A soft tissue will not damage the bristles.
When squeezing the bristles, a person should avoid pulling them, otherwise they will become damaged.
If the brush has oil paints residue on it, then it should be soaked in turpentine.
Mediums that are water based can be soaked in warm water (not hot).
After this the brush is wiped clean with a cloth.
A PH neutral soap is used for getting rid of any paint that might be left over.
Sometimes brushes stain, and that is normal, especially when they are synthetic.
Since oil and water do not mix, an artist shouldn't mix the paintbrushes either.
This way they will be easier to maintain.
If paint has dried on a brush, the brush may be ruined.
Sometimes it is difficult to get the paint out, but a person should use patience instead of pressure.
If using acrylic paint on canvas then cleaning the brushes will require a different technique.
In extreme cases, the differences between brushes that are labeled a size 10, for example, is enormous - more than five times.
This is why purchasing products that you are not familiar with should not be done online.
Unfortunately, this size differences cannot be avoided, especially when buying imported brushes, where standards are different.
Taking proper care of the brushes is a must, if a person wants to use them for a long time.
Cleaning a brush is not difficult if the paint is fresh or from being used on acrylic paintings on canvas.
This is why, even though it takes time, artists always clean their brushes before leaving the studio.
