How to Use a Six-Inch Cast Iron Skillet
- 1). Wash your cast iron skillet before seasoning. Use a soft sponge, a drop of dish soap and warm water. Rinse it well with warm water after scrubbing and dry it with a towel.
- 2). Season your cast iron skillet before you use it the first time. To do this, turn your oven on to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Spread a thin layer of shortening or cooking oil over the interior surface of the cast iron skillet.
- 3). Place a layer of aluminum foil on a baking sheet and place it in the oven on the top rack. Place the skillet in the oven, upside down on the baking sheet. Leave it in the oven for one hour. Turn off the oven at this time and carefully remove the skillet.
- 4). Cook omelets, bacon, single pancakes and other small servings of nearly any food in your skillet. Before cooking, you may need to spray it with cooking spray. However, once the skillet has been seasoned several times, it will naturally stick less. Use a pot holder when grasping the handle, as it will be hot.
