Louisiana License Requirements for Security Guard Companies

    Qualifications

    • RS 37:3276 (Qualifications of licensee) requires that any corporation that seeks licensing to be a private security business must meet certain qualifications before an application is even allowed to be submitted from at least two corporate officers.

      The corporation must be incorporated in Louisiana or possess a Certificate of Authority from the Secretary of State. Potential applicants must be found to have good moral character, majority age, legal mental competence, either a high school diploma or a general equivalence diploma (GED) and United States citizenship. The owner and operators must also lack any record of convictions for moral turpitude, illegal weapons use or possession, any felony or any habit of alcohol or narcotics addiction. Additionally, the owner and operators must have at least three years experience in either private security, civilian law enforcement or active military duty.

    Application

    • Qualified applicants must submit a notarized application to the Louisiana Board of Private Security Examiners. The application must be submitted with the following attached to it: two sets of FBI fingerprint cards for each corporate officer; at least three good moral character attestation letters from reputable non-relatives; Form DD Form 214 (Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty); a copy of the corporate badge and insignia; a copy of the municipal occupational license from each city and each parish where the private security business will operate; a certificate of public general professional liability insurance; copy of Articles of Incorporation; a Certificate of Authority; and a copy of the Social Security cards of the owners/operators.

    Examination

    • After an application is approved, the applicant is scheduled to take an examination that covers all of the information contained in Chapter 47 (Private Contract Security Companies) of Title 37 (Professions and occupations) of the Louisiana Revised Statutes. The passing score on the examination is 70%.

      A foreign corporation with a Certificate of Authority that already has a private security business license in another state with comparable standards, as well as applicants for renewal of a license, are not required take the examination.
