How to Achieve Better Fuel Economy For Flatbed Trucks

103 11
Fuel economy is no joke anymore.
At nearly 5 bucks a gallon, fuel is a truck's largest expense.
Cost of diesel fuel can be make or break for owner operator flatbed truck drivers.
Fuel consumption can differ vastly on identical trucks depending on the driver.
Numerous factors such as wind drag, driving habits etc can affect your fuel mileage.
The idea is to use the lease amount of fuel to get the job done.
This means accelerating the truck gently up to speed and flipping cruise control on as soon as you get there.
But cruise control isn't perfect as it is designed to maintain road speed.
Once you lose ground, cruise is going to power right up to try to make road speed back.
Cruise doesn't know the difference between headwinds or a hill, all it knows is that an external force is slowing down the truck and it will feed as much fuel to the engine as it needs to maintain the set road speed.
A good driver can spot the top of the hill before getting there and ease off the gas, sure you would get to road speed a little slower but would save a lot of fuel.
Drivers should tarp their loads so that there are no loose pieces of tarps hanging around and minimize the wind drag.
Another common bad driving habit is to stay too close to a vehicle that you are following.
Every time the truck gets too close to the vehicle, backs out and then catches up, it wastes a lot of fuel.
You should maintain ample distance between the vehicles that you are following.
