Hair Care for Nubian Twists

    Initial Care

    • Once you get home, rinse your Nubian twists in very warm water to remove any excess hair or fibers from the styling and/or cutting. The warm water will also soothe your scalp and loosen the hair so that you can style more easily. Follow rinsing with a light moisturizer or oil-based spray.

    Regular Maintenance

    • With Nubian twists, you run the risk of your own hair being drier than normal. Consequently, to avoid damage, wash with warm to hot water every 2 to 3 weeks, condition well and moisturize completely. A common assumption is that a thick conditioner will help the hair retain moisture and health. However, thick, creamy mixtures are often hard to rinse out completely and can leave a residue and, over time, a buildup on the roots of the twists. This is very hard to remove when taking hair down and nearly impossible while the twists are still in, attracting unnecessary dust and dirt.

After washing and conditioning, allow hair to air-dry so friction from the towel does not cause roots or twists to become frizzy. Spray with a water-based moisturizer, followed by nourishing oils to seal in moisture. This will provide sheen and deep penetration to your own hair.

Tie a silky scarf nightly around the entire head for maximum longevity in wearing Nubian twists. This will keep your strands smooth and prevent your Nubian twists from becoming tangled and twisted.

    Removal/Take-down

    • Remove twists after they have been in the hair for 2 to 3 months. This will allow your hair to recover from the stress of being covered and twisted for that time. Leaving the Nubian twists in too long can cause the hair to become weak, thin and overly tangled.

Prior to removing, wash your hair and spray with moisturizer and oils while still damp. This will help speed the take-down process and prepare your own hair to be more pliable once uncovered.

Once all twists are removed wash hair thoroughly with a castile-based shampoo or soap. Use a moisturizing detangler or leave-in conditioner to avoid getting snarls and tangles. If the hair gets caught or tied up, gently work through the knots with a wide-toothed comb, working from the ends up in small sections until the entire head is combed through.
