    • 1). Earn a high school diploma, complete the High School Equivalency Program or earn a General Equivalency Diploma. All accredited colleges and universities that offer undergraduate human services degree programs require a high school diploma before enrollment.

    • 2). Identify institutions of higher learning that offer undergraduate human services or social services degree programs. Online, consider those schools that have been accredited by a board or organization approved by the U.S. Department of Education. For example, Indiana University of Pennsylvania offers an accredited undergraduate degree in sociology with a human services track, while the University of Massachusetts offers a solid online human services degree program.

    • 3). Consider schools that offer internship or practicum opportunities, as such programs provide enhanced professional training and contact-building opportunities. Since human services degree programs train students primarily in vocational (as opposed to academic) skill areas, schools that offer career contact opportunities give students a head start in their job search.

    • 4). Apply to multiple institutions to increase your chances of being accepted.

    • 5). Enroll in the required general education and human services major courses by following your academic adviser's recommended schedule. Most programs offer major courses in the following areas of study: human services clinical practice, counseling, developmental psychology, social work and human services public policy. Complete all scheduled assignments, social service projects and papers within the established time frame to remain in good standing.

    • 6). Demonstrate mastery of acquired human and social services skill areas---including psychology, sociology and social work---on assessments and examinations.

    • 7). Declare an intent to graduate after completing all undergraduate human services requirements. This is a necessary bureaucratic step before universities grant a diploma.
