How Not to Lose Money With a Modeling Agency

    Research

    • Don't waste time and money working with bottom-rung modeling agencies. If you have to squint to read the fine print in their weekday newspaper classified ad, there's probably a better-established agency out there for you. Read industry publications, follow online discussions in the modeling community and talk with other models to learn which modeling agencies have the best reputation in your region. There's no sense in losing money by signing on with an unprofessional or has-been modeling agency.

    Fees

    • Legitimate modeling agencies don't charge fees up front for signing you on as a model. They'll definitely take a cut when you start working, but you shouldn't have to pay money just to become affiliated with the modeling agency. This is an easy way to lose money, since you'll never get those fees back and there's no guarantee that you'll be booked for modeling gigs. Politely decline and keep looking for another modeling agency.

    Photos

    • Some modeling agencies make money by referring their models to contracted photographers for expensive portfolio shots. Clients look at modeling portfolio shots to get a sense of what you look like through a camera lens. Agencies might try to intimidate you into booking portfolio pictures through their preferred photographer; it's possible that they're taking a cut, too. Rather than lose money, remember that portfolio shots aren't supposed to be fancy, high-tech shots involving complex lighting and creative props. Clients want to see simple, focused shots of your face and body without a lot of visual distraction. Book a student photographer or inexpensive professional to take your photos instead.

    Contracts

    • Modeling agencies might ask you to sign intimidating, multipage contracts scattered with fine print. You can lose money if you sign without reading and carefully reviewing each contract clause. Before signing, ask to have a parent, lawyer, legal expert or industry colleague review the contract. If you notice unfair terms, unusual requirements or obvious indicators that you're going to lose money by working with the agency, renegotiate terms or find another modeling agency.

    Working

    • You'll lose money fast with a modeling agency if you're booked for gigs but act unprofessionally. After booking a photo shoot, fashion show or audition, arrive early, smile, speak respectfully to everyone present and steer completely free of diva-like tantrums. Being flexible, working hard and following directions will help establish your professional reputation. This leads to more gigs and more money.

    Visibility

    • Don't lose money with a modeling agency by signing a contract and then disappearing into the woodwork. Call periodically, or drop by the office to remind agency reps of your photogenic face and pleasant personality. Write thank-you notes after being booked for gigs, and update agents after you've completed additional training; for example, if you took an acting class then this can be added to your professional résumé.
