How to Deal with the Terrible Twos

If you have a child who has just turned two, did you ever wonder why people refer them as the Terrible Twos? The answer to this is because this is the time in a child's development where he starts to make his own choices. This is the time that the toddler starts to realize that he does not need to always want what his parent wants. As such, he starts making up his own mind on certain things. This is also the time that children start to assert their ability to decide for themselves by often disagreeing with persons of authority. For parents, this is often a difficult stage. If you have a 2-year old, remember that this is a phase and it will pass.

Because of the child's new discovery for disobeying certain rules, he starts to assert himself through different ways. If he can't get what he wants, he will start throwing a temper tantrum even if he is out in public. If this is not corrected, he will develop more serious behaviour problems that you will have a difficult time later on. This is why you need to know how to react when your child is exhibiting his freedom.

Going back to the part that this is all just a phase, parents need to understand that during this time their kids still have illogical and irrational wants. Once the child realizes he can make decisions for himself, he will start showing everyone that he can do it. As a parent, you should not take it so personally because children do not really realize what they are doing. They are not even trying to frustrate you with their behavior. They are simply showing that they can already start making their own decisions.

The best thing to do with the Terrible Twos is to learn how to survive it. Since it is just a phase, the child will eventually outgrow his behaviour. One way you can do this is to offer limited choices to your child. For example, when you are letting him choose the color of shirt he wants to wear, don't give him the option to choose from everything inside his closet. Instead, just present to him a couple of options so he can make one choice. In a way, this will also help you stay in control of the situation because you are only offering something that will not have an adverse effect to your plans or schedules.

You have to keep in mind, this is all a phase. It is best that you know how to handle such scenarios so you do not instill the wrong values and lead your child to develop behaviour problems. After all, you will be the one who will be affected by it in the end.
