Get Rich, Even If You Suck At Everything (Like Me)
I could never do any kind of math in my head unless it was very basic.
I also have no in demand, special skills.
No computer programming or IT knowledge.
I failed quantitative analysis in university and narrowly passed on the second try.
I'm also quite socially inept.
I would rather be alone, then with groups of people.
I'm still single.
I work at a restaurant and liquor store, hardly the career I want.
I used to be a real fast runner.
Luckily, if you want to get rich and you have a dream, none of the above has to matter and it can even slow down your wealth building journey at times.
You must start with a dream.
Look into your future and think about where you could be if you were financially free.
Imagine the freedom you could have, comfortably living off your dividends and interest income.
This alone is enough to motivate me, however the benefits reach beyond just your wallet.
If you're like me, making a modest income at best, there are specific lifestyle changes that can truly accelerate your wealth building plan.
Ironically, these lifestyle changes can also help you become healthier, decrease stress and negative energy, and increase your happiness.
Once you have a dream, you then have to master the simple guiding principles of building wealth.
Thankfully, no special knowledge required.
Firstly, the way to riches is the same as it's always been; slow, steady and diligent investing.
Investing in yourself, stocks, bonds and real estate.
No need to venture outside those four.
Investing in yourself starts with acknowledging and eliminating wealth destructive practices in your life.
A good start is to eat healthier.
Not only does eating healthier save you money, it can lead to a longer, higher quality life, and greater self-confidence and motivation.
Changing your grocery list from frozen foods, snacks and soda, to nuts, oatmeal, fruits and veggies can have a surprising impact on your finances and wellbeing.
There's simply no logical reason why we all shouldn't start eating healthier and save more money, minus the absurd coupon cutting.
Acknowledging and coming to terms with your vice is a key step to building wealth.
Generally, a person's vice can easily support a million dollar wealth building journey.
I am not going to preach and say 'stop drinking and smoking', yet be aware, especially on a low income, it is almost impossible to get ahead if you cannot eliminate or control your vice.
Personally, I work at a liquor store part time; I see countless people almost everyday spending at least $20 on wine or beer.
That's $7300.
00 a year, a terrific amount to begin saving.
Even worse is the amount of money some people waste away at bars and restaurants.
This doesn't have to be you.
Embracing independent thinking is another important practice.
You must create your own path, regardless of what your friends are doing or what society implies.
If you just did what everyone else did, you'll be broke and in debt, just like everyone else.
This leads to stress and negative energy.
It makes logical sense that, to get into the top 1%, you have to be very unconventional and not do what the rest of the 99% are doing; otherwise you'll end up like the 99%.
Practically, this means not keeping up with the Jones', embracing minimalism, becoming more spiritual, not buying new cars, buying a house you can easily afford, increasing your income, finding pleasure in friends and family, not on spending mindlessly etc.
By making these lifestyle changes and diligently sticking to them, you will find that the money just simply follows.
Now, that's the hard part.
The easy part is the actual investing in investments.
Simply take the money you save every month from adjusting your lifestyle, and invest it in a widely held stock index fund every month (you can find these through your bank or brokerage).
Repeat this every month.
Hold till financial freedom.
It's really that easy.
