Materials and Cutting Instructions to Create This Purse
Materials:
- 1 fat quarter for the dark, center section
- 2 fat quarters for contrasting top and bottom section
- Purchased purse handle or 1 fat quarter for straps
- 1 yard Pellon Fleece - Found on the bolt in the interfacing section of a fabric store-- You can use batting but you must quilt batting at specified (on label)intervals.
- 1 fat quarter for the lining
- Magnetic pocketbook closure
- Texture Magic (47" x 18" size)
- Optional: Purse handles or rings to attach self-fabric handles.
- For the Closing Tab -- Cut two of fabric, two of fleece and two of Texture Magic -- 3.5" by 8"
- The Center Fabric -- Cut two of fabric, two of fleece and two of Texture Magic-- 8" by 16" (Optional 2 of heavy sturdy interfacing, sewn on after the fabric is textured with Texture Magic)
- The Top of the Bag -- Cut four of fabric, four of fleece (optional four of heavy sturdy interfacing) -- 3" by 12"
- For the Bottom of the Bag-- cut two of fabric and two of fleece and two of heavy, sturdy interfacing - 5" by 12"
- For the Strap Tabs -- cut four 4" by 6" of the fabric, the fleece and Texture Magic
- For the straps -- Cut two 21" by 6" (2 of fabric, 2 of fleece and 2 of texture magic if you want textured handles.
- For the lining - cut two pieces 10 1/2" by 12 1/2"
- Optional: Zipped Lining Pocket Directions
- For Base of Pocketbook - Plexiglas, plastic canvas, light-weight board or similar material cut to 3 1/2" by 8"
Prepare Textured Pieces
Using the purse pieces that will be textured:
- Mark texture Magic with 1" square grid
- Sandwich the fashion fabric, fleece and Texture Magic
- Zigzag the edges to hold the edges aligned
- Stitch the grid lines (A basting stitch was used in the samples shown through out this project.)
- Steam the Texture Magic as directed on the packaging to created a textured fabric.
- Back with heavy sturdy interfacing if desired
Handle Tabs
Using the Strap Tabs (four 4" by 6" of the fabric, the fleece and Texture Magic)
- Fold the length of each tab in half,right sides together, matching the long edges.
- Using a 1/4" seam allowance sew the long edge of each matched edges.
- Turn the tubes right sides out.
- Insert the tab through the prepared straps or rings to use self straps.
- Fold the tabs in half, matching the short ends.
- Baste the short ends together.
Closing Tab
Using the prepared Closing Tab pieces (3.5" by 8"):
- Center one half of the magnetic closure approximate one and a half inches from an end.
- Secure the magnetic closure, creating as minimal as possible slits for the tabs to go through the layers of fabric and securing the back on the piece as tightly as possible.
- Place right sides together and align the edges.
- Sew one short edge and both longer edges using a 1/4" or less seam allowance.
- Trim the seam allowance, diagonally across the corners.
- Turn right sides out and press.
- Baste the remaining shorter edges together.
Top Section
Using the prepared Top of the Bag Pieces (3" by 12")
- Layer the top of the bag pieces and baste the edges together.
- Pin the handle tabs, on a long edge, 2" in from the ends.
- Baste in place.
- Center the closing tab on one section, aligning the top edge and raw edge of the closing tab.
- Baste in place.
- Placing right sides together, align the edges.
- Sew the long edge that has the handle tabs attached, using a 1/2" seam allowance on both sets of top sections.
- Sew again, reinforcing the area the handle tabs are attached.
- Apply a seam finish.
- Press as sewn.
Snap Section
- Fold both top sections in half on the new seam.
- Place the top sections as shown in the photo and find the placement for the other side of the magnetic snap, remembering to keep the snap above the bottom 1" so a seam can be sewn.
- Attach the magnetic snap section through the one layer of the top section as if closing the top.
- Unfold the top sections for the remaining steps.
Join Sections
- Place bottom sections pieces, right sides together, aligning the edges.
- Sew one long edge, using a 1/2" seam allowance.
- Place a textured center section edge on each long edge of the bottom section, right sides together, aligning the edges.
- Sew the long edge, using a 1/2" seam allowance.
- Paying attention to where the closure and straps are placed, join one part of each top section to the remaining long edge of each textured section.
Side Seams
- Fold the joined sections along the bottom seam, placing the right sides together.
- Align the seams and edges.
- Pin in place.
- Sew the side seams using a 1/2" seam allowance.
Square the Bottom
- Place the side seam on top of the bottom seam, creating a triangle corner.
- Measure in 2" from the point and mark across.
- Stitch in place.
- Trim down to a seam allowance and apply a seam finish.
Turn, Finish and Self Fabric Handles
- Create optional inside pockets, remembering that 1/2" in from all edges is needed for seam allowances and that 2 1/2" in from the bottom 12 1/2" edge will be used in the bottom of the bag.
- Place lining pieces, wrong sides together, aligning all edges.
- Sew one bottom 12 1/2" edge and both 10 1/2" edges using a 1/2" seam allowance.
- Apply a seam finish.
- Finish the bottom corners the same way you did for the body of the bag.
- Place the bag (right sides out) inside the lining (wrong side out on the lining so right sides are together).
- Match edges and seams.
- Pin in place.
- Sew the layers together 1/2" in from edge, leaving an opening to turn the bag right side out and to slide the optional bag base/bottom through. (The amount of opening will vary on how much batting and interfacing you used.)
- Turn the bag right side out through the lining opening.
- Place one top section and the lining inside the bag.
- Press the top edge.
- Optional: Place the base/bottom in the bag.
- Turn under 1/2" of remaining unattached lining edge.
- Pin in place to the edge of the inside bag top section.
- Hand sew, using small secure stitches, to finish attaching the lining.
- Layer and texture the fabric if desired.
- Fold the strips in half, lengthwise, with the right sides together.
- Sew a seam on the long edge and one end, using a 1/4" seam allowance.
- Turn right sides out.
- On the end with raw edges, turn in the raw edges and slip stitch the end closed.
- Repeat for the second strap.
- Place the end through the rings that are on the strap tabs and fold them up over itself.
- Bar tack or sew the ends down on the straps.
