As you get older take some time and ask your dad, an uncle, or an older friend or co-worker about issues they may have had with their prostate. Chances are you will get an earful, sometimes with a little to much information, about all the problems that little organ has given him over the years. Or he may know someone else who has had prostate health issues and he will relate their story to you.

The truth is a high percentage of men will deal with some sort of prostate issue as they get older. Enlarged prostate, benign prostatic hypertrophy (BHP) and cancer of the prostate are all issues that most men will have to deal with in some form or the other.

Here's a true fact that most men either don't know or choose to ignore; one of the most common prostatic ailments is prostate cancer. It is the most common form of cancer that afflicts men, occurring in nearly the same percentages as breast cancer occurs in women. Unfortunately it is not something that most men want to talk about, let alone deal with and it's just in recent years that it has begun to get the press that other forms of cancer receive.

A lot of men also don't quite know where the prostate lives in their body or what it does. It is a small sex organ, about the size of a walnut, located just below the bladder. It wraps around the urethra and its main function is to add seminal fluid to your sperm during ejaculation.

For most men it remains an unknown organ until it begins to act up. When they begin to suffer one of the common ailments they learn soon enough that its there and what it does, usually through their doctor.

And if you think it only affects men over 50 think again. Even younger men can get an extremely painful infection known as prostatitis. This infections causes the prostate to swell and presents with a fever, painful burning during urination, and fatigue.

For men over 50 the most common condition is an enlarged prostate known as benign prostatic hypertrophy. It is a benign condition which is non-life threatening. It is more common then prostatic cancer but it does need to be treated.

It should also be noted that the symptoms of BHP and cancer are generally the same; leaking or dribbling while urinating, weak urination, trouble starting and stopping urination, and blood in the urine. The problem with prostate cancer is once the symptoms begin to show the tumor has already been growing for quite some time; all the more reason to get checked regularly by your doctor. While not always the case men also need to understand that hypertrophy and cancer can occur together.

All men need to take their prostate health very seriously. For men over forty regular checkups with their doctor is the best way to ensure that the more serious issue of cancer does not sneak up on them as they get older. All prostatic conditions, including cancer, are treatable if caught early on.
