A well-planned gout diet can have amazing results to help reduce the symptoms of gout.
But, if you want your gout diet to be effective, there are several different types of foods that you need to avoid.
The condition of gout is caused by increased levels of uric acid in a person's body, so in order for someone to relieve their symptoms they need to drop the levels of uric acid and keep those levels in check in order to avoid future gout attacks.
When you are following a gout diet, foods to avoid are the ones that contain purines.
A diet full of purines will increase the uric acid in the body.
But don't worry, there are still plenty of good foods that you can enjoy.
Here is a list of high purine items that should be avoided: Any form of alcohol should be eliminated from the diet, especially beer.
A good alternative is to drink plenty of water, staying hydrated will help to keep the uric acid levels low.
A gout diet requires that the person limit the amount of animal proteins that are consumed, especially red meats and organ meats such as: beef, kidney, and liver.
If you cannot eliminate meat from your diet, you should choose to eat white meats such as chicken and turkey.
Although most produce foods are good for gout, there are a few types of plant based items that need to be avoided in a gout diet.
You should reduce your intake of dried beans, lentils, peas, asparagus, spinach, cauliflower and mushrooms.
Avoid eating larger amounts of seafood, especially shellfish.
Many kinds of seafood contain purines which may increase the uric acid levels in your body.
