Here Comes the Budget
You know what that means, right? No, I was not referring to the massive amount of snow waiting for you as soon as you open the garage door.
I'm referring to that giant document developed by Congress each year that makes our country run.
Yes, it's almost time for the initial drafts of the federal budget to be released.
OK, you're probably not so excited about this, but that doesn't change its importance.
We all know this country has some major deficit problems to address.
In March, spending is set to reach the debt ceiling and Congress will raise it as it has done several times before.
It may be frustrating, but the alternative is not raising it and having the U.
S.
defaulting on its credit.
The result of this would be a global economic meltdown overnight.
Essentially, the dollar would become worthless.
Whether you're rich or poor now, everyone would be poor if the debt ceiling isn't raised.
Hundreds of millions of jobs would be lost around the world by the following morning.
Obviously, Congress cannot allow this to happen.
So once the debt ceiling is raised to a new limit, Congress will address the budget for next year and adjust it to spend less.
Many have been worried that this might mean cuts in Social Security and specifically the Disability Insurance program.
But Social Security Disability lawyers can take a deep breath and hold on to their jobs; Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid stated early last week that the entire social security program is "off the table" when it comes to budget cuts.
No matter how much is cut from Republicans in the House, the budget will not pass the Senate if Social Security is diminished in any way.
So, if you do depend on Social Security or Disability Insurance as your source on income, then take a deep breath.
You may not be in danger of having your income cut now, but that does not mean social security is safe from future cuts.
Keep track of the budget debates in the news and write your representatives in Congress if you're concerned.
This spring should be a fun season for politics.
