Jailbreaking, sometimes referred to as unlocking a device, is the act of removing the restrictions that the carrier or the manufacturer has imposed on the device through its operating system through the use of custom kernels. Jailbreaking is done by experts as it entails obtaining the root access of the operating system that is running on the device so that it will be able to accept and download applications from other software platforms which his carrier frowns upon or did not want the device to do.

IS IT LEGAL TO UNLOCK A DEVICE?
The most common question about unlocking or jailbreaking the device is regarding its legality. As of the present, there are no passed laws imposing that unlocking a device is illegal. However, if a device has already been unlocked and it got broken, the carrier of the phone has the prerogative of refusing to fix it as it has been jailbroken already.

WHY IS IT CALLED JAILBREAKING?
The term €jailbreak€ refers to the idea that a device is inside a jail or is limited to collect or download applications only from its prescribed applications store as allowed by its operating system. The jail is the official application store which the provider wants the user to exclusively get applications from.

WHAT HAPPENS IF I JAILBREAK MY DEVICE?
If a device has been freed from its jail, the user can expect that he or she can exercise his or her device's full potential without any restraints. Some application stores post censorship, paid applications and other limitations. Jailbreaking means freeing your device from the limitations that the carrier has set and giving your device the freedom to install applications, extensions and themes from a native APT client.

DOES JAILBREAKING HAVE A CATCH?
Though not literally confirmed, carriers who put restrictions on their devices says that jailbreaking a device can bring a myriad of headaches to the user such as faster battery draining, hangs and getting it bricked - term used when the device fails to respond. Though there is a slim chance of these back logs happening, doing a master reset or restoration of the device through the device itself or by connecting it to your personal computer will automatically solve the problem. However, after the master reset, the phone will not be on its jailbroken state anymore.

OVERVIEW
At the end of the day, the advantages of jailbreaking a device overpowers its cons. By unlocking your device, you are sensibly removing the handcuffs that its manufacturers have instilled on it. Mobile phones as well as other devices that can be jailbroken have so much potential within them and they can do so much more if only they are used to the maximum level of their full-blown features.
