How do I File for an Extension for Kansas Taxes?
- 1). Download Internal Revenue Service Form 4868 (Application for Automatic Extension of Time To File U.S. Individual Income Tax Return) from the IRS website, www.irs.gov, and complete the form.
- 2). Make a copy of your IRS Form 4868 before mailing it in to the IRS. The mailing address is listed on the form and depends on where you live.
- 3). File the Kansas Payment Voucher payment form, K-40V, before April 15 if you expect to owe money on your Kansas state income taxes. If you expect a refund, you can skip this step. When completed, mail the form to Kansas Income Tax, Kansas Department of Revenue, 915 S.W. Harrison St., Topeka, KS 66699-1000.
- 4). Enclose a copy of Form 4868 with your Kansas state income tax return when you file your Kansas taxes. The filing extension allows you to file until Oct. 15.
