Clothing and Toys

• Children who have been living in an orphanage probably do not have many belongings of their own. Whether the child is an infant or an older child, clothing is usually needed and appreciated. For a baby, go with onesies, soft dresses, pants and shirts. Choose age-appropriate clothing for older children. For a couple adopting an infant, choose toys like rattles or soft toys. Older children might enjoy puzzles, books and games.
  
  

Journal

• Give the parents who are adopting a child a journal. They can write down their thoughts and feelings while they are traveling to the orphanage and anticipating becoming parents. The parents can continue writing in the journal after they have brought the child home, recording all of the milestones and memories that they experience. The journal can be a gift to the child when she is older.
  
  

Regional Gifts

• A gift from the child's country of birth is a thoughtful choice for parents. For example, select books or DVDs about the culture and history of the country. Or choose foods and spices that are commonly used in the culture's cuisine. Such familiar items may help an adopted child who is older transition more easily to a new culture. Decorative items such as artwork depicting scenes from the country are other gift options.
  
  

Orphanage Donation

• Make a donation to the orphanage the child is leaving. Many orphanages do not have the resources they need, and a financial donation can help pay for many types of expenses. Or donate necessities such as clothing, toys, diapers, blankets and over-the-counter medications.
