Home Remedy for White Sooty Mold
- You will need to find out what type of insect is creating the mold on your plants. Different insects will react in various ways, and you will want to make the remedy that will work the best for your situation.
A way to attract the flies away from the plant and catch them is to use sticky yellow cards and place them in front of your plant and in between them if you have more than one. This will attract the insects and hold them until you dispose of the card. You can buy these at home and garden stores, or you can make them at home with double-sided tape laid on a piece of cardboard and brushed with an attractive solution such as honey. - Using a homemade remedy of water, and sugar, and boric acid powder, you can lure insects such as ants, whiteflies, and others to the sweet feast. Once they sample the boric acid, they will die. This will result in many dead insects, so prepare for the cleanup afterward.
Slowly stir 2 cups of granulated sugar into 1 gal. of water. After the sugar is added, stir in 1/2 cup of boric acid. Continue stirring until all powders have been dissolved. Pour the mixture into small containers and place them near the plants that are suffering from white sooty mold. This mixture should effectively take care of any pests that have infested your plants. - For some types of white sooty mold, the best thing to do is to wash it off. This mold doesn't necessarily mean that the plant has been harmed. If left on the plant, the mold will cause withering and the plant will eventually die, but if you take action when it's first noticed, the plant will probably recover.
Use 1/4 cup laundry detergent and 1 gal. of steaming hot water. Blend both in a bucket and mix in 1/4 cup of white vinegar. Fill spray bottles with this liquid and place towels around the plant. Spray the plant generously with the liquid and leave it for on the plant for 20 minutes. Use a soft scrub brush or old toothbrush to gently clean away the moldy soot. This remedy not only cleans the plant but also kills the spores and eliminates the chance of the infestation from recurring. To ensure that the spores are dead, heat the leaves with a blow dryer on a low setting for fifteen minutes.
