How to Prepare to Be a Mommy

    • 1). Prepare yourself mentally by keeping informed with parenting literature and seeking mentorship from other mothers. Read parenting books. Find an experienced mother to mentor you through the process. Consider joining a mothers' support group as well. Talking with other mothers and prospective mothers can also help you emotionally.

    • 2). Be at your physical best throughout your pregnancy. In Pregnancy Today, Dr. Kevin Leman says, "Mothers who eat well and exercise before the baby comes are more physically and emotionally able to withstand the demands that motherhood makes on the body." Discuss an exercise procedure and routine with your doctor that best aligns with your prenatal care.

    • 3). Keep potential lifestyle changes such as work schedule under consideration throughout your pregnancy. Determine whether you will need to take time off from work or perhaps work from home. Try to live off one income for a while in preparation for maternity leave if you live in a two-income home. If possible, set some money aside for emergency expenses before switching to one income.

    • 4). Take care of a friend or relative's children before welcoming your own. Carol Evans of Working Mother Media suggests that there is no real way to fully prepare for being a parent emotionally. However, you can familiarize yourself with some of the duties and process by taking care of a niece or nephew for a few weeks.

    • 5). Maintain a balanced lifestyle before your baby's arrival. Remember that despite motherhood being your main priority, you must make time for yourself and the other people who are important to you. Consistently make time for your significant other, loved ones and personal interests as you prepare to welcome a child into your home. Doing these things before your child arrives will make you happier and healthier--and prepared to continue doing so once the child arrives.
