How to Remove an Adhesive Sign From Painted Fiberglass
- 1). Turn your hairdryer on high heat, and blast the adhesive label with hot air for 90 seconds or so. Pay special attention to the edges of the label. The heat is not hot enough to melt the underlying paint, but it may be just enough to loosen the adhesive.
- 2). Scrape the sign off with a plastic scraper, credit card or any plastic item with a flat, thin edge. Start with one corner and work your way diagonally through the label. Hold the edge of your scraper as close to parallel to the surface of the paint as possible to avoid gouging it. Use moderate pressure. Never attempt to chip the sign away. Re-apply the heat as necessary to loosen the adhesive as it cools. If the sign remains stubbornly in place, move on to Step 3. If the sign comes off but the adhesive stays behind, move to Step 3.
- 3). Wash the area with soapy water and scrub vigorously with a sponge. Extend your scrubbing roughly 1 inch beyond the sign or remaining adhesive. Allow the solution to sit for 5 minutes. Ensure the area remains wet while it sits. If the paper or plastic sign is still attached to the adhesive, try scraping again while the sign is saturated with water. Wet a sponge, wring it out, wipe the area clean and allow it to air dry.
- 4). Wet the adhesive or remaining paper or plastic with a lubricant spray. Extend the wet area one inch beyond the sign's area Leave the spray in place for 5 minutes, re-wetting as necessary.
- 5). Scrape or wipe the remainder of the adhesive away.
