How to Weld Copper Tubing
- 1). Measure the length of the pipe and cut it with a hacksaw or tube cutter.
- 2). Sand the exterior of the end of the pipe with emery cloth or steel wool.
- 3). Clean the inside of the pipe fittings with a round wire brush. Removing dirt and grease from where the copper will be joined makes a better seal.
- 4). Spread a thin layer of flux onto the last inch of the copper pipe with a flux brush.
- 5). Slide the pipe into the fitting until you reach the bottom, twisting the fitting to spread the flux across the surface of the pipe.
- 6). Heat both sides of the fitting where you inserted the copper tubing with a propane torch. Apply the flame until the flux begins to bubble and sizzle.
- 7). Touch the solder to the pipe, pulling it across the joint. The solder immediately should melt and be sucked up into the joint.
- 8). Wipe away any excess solder with a rag.
- 9). Turn on the water and check the joint for leaks. If the joint leaks, take it apart and re-solder it.
