A Michigan man is starting off 2012 with a home security story that is both ridiculous and sad.

Detroit resident Sean Street got a call from his mother that her front door had been kicked open. She was afraid to go into her apartment, and needed help. Street called 911 to report the incident, and then got in his car and raced to his mother’s apartment. It took him over an hour to get to his mother’s home, and when he arrived, the police had not yet shown up. He called 911 for help a second time to check when the police were going to arrive. After waiting another hour with his mother, Sean Street decided to call the police a third time when they still did not show up. He was very polite and respectful on the phone, and he continued to wait. The 911 dispatcher told Street not to take things into his own hands, but rather to keep waiting.

The police eventually showed up and found out from a witness that two males in black hooded sweatshirts were seen breaking in. Unfortunately due to the delay, the burglars were long gone. The police never followed up with Street’s mother, and the property will probably be lost forever. The icing on the cake, however, is that Street received a misdemeanor ticket for “malicious use of communications device misuse of 911.” His crime is that he repeatedly called 911 and escalated the issue because he was dissatisfied with the police response time. Street needs to appear in court, and if he is found guilty, he can face a fine of $500 and up to 90 days in prison.

Michigan residents should never be faced with criminal charges when asking the police for help. It’s a ridiculous situation for Street to be in, and he hopefully he will be cleared of all charges in court. The best course of action, however, is to have multiple security measures in place to deter burglars from robbing you in the first place.

There are a number of security tools you can put into place to make criminals want to skip your home and move on to someone else’s:

• A home security system is the most important crime deterrent you can install. When armed, a burglar will trigger the alarm to sound and this draws attention to the crime in progress. Most criminals run away when an alarm sounds, and in case they don’t, the central monitoring station will alert the police immediately that a burglary is happening.

• Motion-sensor security lighting is another effective and inexpensive crime deterrent. Adding a few lights above a front door, back door, side entrance, or over a window by a fire escape will literally shine a light on a criminal trying to break in. It’s an excellent home security [http://www.lifeshield.com/best-home-security/simple-security/m] method.

• Video cameras are not only useful as a crime deterrent, but they can also be used to catch and prosecute criminals. Some cameras record continuously, others use motion sensors or alarms as recording triggers. There are hundreds, if not thousands of videos on YouTube of criminals breaking into homes, stores and businesses.

Michigan residents should be able to contact the police and emergency services at 911 whenever they need it. It is important to keep tabs on this story to see whether Sean Street is found innocent or guilty of any crimes. The best way to avoid needing the police is to prevent a crime from happening in the first place. Anyone looking to increase their Michigan home security should use any and all anti-burglary measures available to them.
