How to Cut Bamboo Stalks
- 1). Cut away canes for rooting new plants first. Nip off a 6-inch long cane with leaves on the top just below a new leaf node or small bump on the cane. Strip away all but the top two or three leaves, dip in rooting hormone and place in a glass of water or prepared container immediately.
- 2). Nip away canes you want to be rid of very close to the ground, leaving only about 1 or 2 inches of cane above the ground to indicate where the bamboo used to be. Lay the cut canes aside to dry out before disposing of them or recycling them into projects.
- 3). Slip the point of your trowel into the topsoil. Push the soil aside until the bamboos’ red rhizomes or roots are visible. Push the trowel down through the roots. Keep cutting until each cane stump is dug up, severing as many rhizomes as possible.
- 4). Water the area as normal. Cut back new bamboo shoots as soon as possible. Continue this cycle until no more bamboo shoots come up. This means the nutrients in the soil are exhausted and the bamboo can no longer grow.
