How to Find Leaks in a Copper Pipe Behind the Walls

    • 1). Look on the walls and floor for water spots and dripping water. The first sign of a leaky pipe for most people is a water spot on a wall. However, the location of the spot is not the same location as the leak as the water probably dripped from the leak.

    • 2). Look at a layout of your home's pipe system in the blueprints, if available. This way you'll know where all the pipes in your home are so you'll have a better idea of which pipe could be leaking.

    • 3). Go into your basement, if you have one, and look for evidence of the leak. If you have access to your home's pipes, also check them for the leak.

    • 4). Knock 1-inch holes in the wall around the leak area to see if you can find the leak. When you find it, mark the area by tying a cloth around the pipe so you don't lose it.
