    • 1). Visit www.irs.gov for the information you need to file your income tax return. Click on the appropriate tab for your tax situation -- individual, self-employed, etc. -- and look for current tax season news. Click on the FAQ link for quick answers to common questions. Click on "tax topics" on the site map to find more specific information, or use the "forms and publications" link to locate publications containing even more details.

    • 2). Download the forms you need from the "forms and publications" link. Search for your form by number, then download it using the most current version of Adobe Acrobat Reader. Download this program at no cost if necessary. Order the forms on the same page if you prefer, or click on the contact information link to order via phone.

    • 3). Click on "e-File" for information on this electronic filing option. Use the "FreeFile" link to see if you qualify based on income restrictions and other factors. Choose from a list of independent companies to use a FreeFile tax preparation site at no charge; state tax filing is usually extra. Have the same tax information handy that you would use to file your taxes on paper. Jot down the provider's customer service contact numbers and addresses before you start. Write down your confirmation number after you submit your return

    • 4). Contact the IRS if you need assistance while filing your return. Call 1-800-829-1040 to speak with a representative who can access your tax account and provide tax advice. Visit the "help" link on any page on the IRS site for assistance with finding information and forms on the website, or for technical assistance with downloading forms.

    • 5). Contact the AARP's Tax-Aide program, which is available to taxpayers with low and moderate incomes (see link in Resources).
