Neck Pain Is No Laughing Matter

Neck pain is probably one of the most annoying types of pain there is.  It is also uniquely debilitating in the way it impedes mobility and impacts one’s life.
There are a range of reasons for neck pain, from sleeping in an awkward position to experiencing a sharp jerking injury such as that sustained during a fall or a car accident.  Depending upon the severity of the strain put on the spine and neck muscles that results in pain and/or injury, the pain can last days, weeks, or months and range from mild to extremely severe.

Mild neck pain probably does not need to be worried about unless it is chronic and inexplicable.  Then one should look into what factors in life that may be causing this and seek to eliminate or at least mitigate them.  Just because a person is not in agony, doesn’t require living with low-level discomfort on a regular basis if there is a simple solution such as chiropractic adjustment, exercise, a different pillow or some combination of the three.

Even severe neck pain does not have to be cause for concern unless it persists or returns on a regular basis.  Severe neck pain is the kind that strikes when the sufferer moves in such a way as to aggravate stressed or injured muscles and nerves and is rewarded for this incaution with agony.  This too can arise from simply having one’s head at an awkward angle for too long and will usually dissipate in a day or two.  If it doesn’t, it may require treatment.

Even though not necessarily indicative of a larger problem, this type of pain can have a disproportionate impact on the sufferer’s life.  The reason for this is that unlike most types of pain, it is not constant or even consistent and may only strike at a particular angle that is only reached a few times a day.  Such as when one is changing lanes or backing out while driving.

Being struck by a sudden, sharp, and often devastatingly strong pain while driving, biking, or performing some other equally important activity can be very hazardous.  For this reason, among others, such pain, if it is not transient, should be investigated and treated before it begins to seriously impair life or endanger others.

This is equally true of neck pain that is the definite result of an injury.  Not only does it impede daily functioning, but also it may well be indicative of something far more severe than simple stressed nerves and muscles.  When the head jerks forward sharply, the pounds per inch of pressure are increased well beyond what that body part is normally called on to deal with and the subsequent damage can be long-lasting and not immediately visible.

This is why it is wise to seek treatment immediately and to follow-up on that care to make certain there are not hidden swellings or tears or other more serious problems.  It is also important to make sure the injury is healing as it should.  Improper healing can lead to severely limited mobility and range of vision, which can put a definite crimp into a person’s life.
