      Doctors specializing in the care of the skin study dermatology. According to the American Skin Association, "over 100 million Americans---1/3 of the nation's population---suffer from skin cancers, diseases and disorders that too often result in pain, disfigurement, disability and loss of life. Skin ailments affect people of all ages, races and economic backgrounds, and annually cost the United States alone $39 billion." Dermatologists must complete their medical degree, either an M.D. or D.O, an internship and a three-year residency to become fully qualified.

    Dermatologist

    • The American Academy of Dermatology defines a dermatologist as a physician who specializes and extensively trains in treating skin problems and maintaining healthy skin. Dermatologists deal with acne and adolescent skin, rosacea, cosmeceuticals, hair loss, hormones' effect on the skin, laser hair removal, lip and mouth care, liposuction, mature skin, nails, psoriasis, skin care during pregnancy, sensitive skin, tattoos and body piercings, and effects of tropical travel.

    Surgical Dermatologist

    • There are fellowships offered for dermatologists for certification for surgical procedures. Dermatologists who complete this program are qualified to perform cosmetic or cosmeceutical surgery such as Botox.

    Dermatopathologist

    • A dermatopathologist focuses on the diagnosis of skin diseases. Pathologists and dermatologists are eligible to become certified; the difference in training is that certified dermatologists must study surgical pathology.

    Immunodermatologist

    • Immunodermatology studies the skin in terms of immunity and disease as part of the comprehensive health of an individual. According to the the University of Utah, "Immunodermatology testing is essential to the correct diagnosis and treatment of certain skin disorders, some intestinal diseases and allergic diseases."
