How to Recognize Depression in Men

    • 1). Pay attention to any changes in mood. You may notice that a man in your life seems more quiet than usual, sad or down. Be aware that men who are depressed may demonstrate increased irritability rather than the more obvious signs such as chronic sadness.

    • 2). Noticing changes in energy level, motivation or activities of interest may clue a loved one to signs of depression in men. Loss of interest or pleasure in sexual activity is a particularly identifiable sign of depression in men.

    • 3). Observe sleeping and eating patterns. If significant changes are identified, such as poor sleep or eating less than normal, they may signal a problem with depression.

    • 4). Listen for feelings of worthlessness, guilt or having the perception that he can do nothing right. This is typically how men express issues with self-esteem and is cause for concern for depression.

    • 5). Recognizing the need for intervention may occur if a man is consumed with thoughts of death, dying or has made suicidal statements. This creates a need for immediate assessment by a professional for safety as men are at a higher risk of suicide than women.
