    Internals

    • The 2.3-liter engine, used as the base engine in the E model, had an inline four-cylinder configuration. It had a bore (cylinder width) of 3.76 inches and a stroke (distance the piston travels inside the cylinder) of 3.16 inches. This engine had a total displacement of 2,299 cubic centimeters and a compression ratio of 9.0:1.

    Output

    • Because it was a smaller four-cylinder engine, its power output was not overwhelming, but it was respectable for its time period. This engine produced 130 horsepower and 146 pound-feet of torque.

    Fuel

    • This 2.3-liter engine provided the Mercedes 190E with a fuel economy of 21 miles per gallon in the city and 29 mpg on the highway. The engine received fuel by way of electronic fuel injection (EFI).
