Herb Dangers for the Elderly

Working as a master herbalist has given me the opportunity to understand how herbal remedies act and interact with themselves, regular medications and medical conditions.
It has also shown me how careful we have to be when suggesting supplements to the elderly.
Many have conditions that make practicing herbal medicine dangerous.
Why? The idea that herbs are all natural doesn't agree with the conclusion that they are therefore always safe.
It doesn't matter the age in this department.
There are herbs that shouldn't be given to children, to women or to men.
Not knowing the possible problems can be deadly at any age.
Specifics: There are hundreds of specifics but I'd like to point out a few problems that the elderly might face with common supplements.
If you are on blood thinners garlic is a bad idea.
It can do the same thing.
If you are on heart medications, most of them interact badly with St.
John's Wort.
Even food can be a problem.
Grapefruit and its juice interacts with some high blood pressure medications.
How to Tell: Some of the best supplement manufacturers put this information with the product.
Some don't.
Finding out which are safe may require more effort.
Consulting: There are three professionals that can help.
Many doctors are learning about supplements in order to help their patients.
Pharmacists usually know a great deal about them, as most drugs are still made from plants.
A well trained master herbalist will also be able to help to a degree.
However, said well trained person would also recommend you check with your doctor and your pharmacist.
Herbal remedies can do many wonderful things.
When the wrong ones are chosen they can also do many dangerous things.
It is always important to consult before starting any supplement.
