Removing black mold doesn't have to be a tedious, a long or even an expensive task. It can be done using some everyday items that most people will have around the household, and plenty of due care and attention. If you have the right information, the right tools and the right mind-set, you will find removing black mold isn't as difficult as it has been made out to be…

Before we begin, I must stress that if you are at all unsure or if you don't feel 100% confident to handle the black mold removal job yourself, then you shouldn't attempt it, you should call on a black mold remediation professional to come and do the job for you. You will have to pay for it, but it's not worth risking your health over saving some money.

The easiest and most common household method for removing black mold is probably by using a chlorine bleach product. This has disinfectant properties so it kills any bacteria it touches. By giving the area a good and thorough clean, you can eliminate the black mold and do your best to prevent any further outbreaks in the future.

Before you begin you need to make sure you have your protective gear; this includes a mask and gloves. You'll need the face mask to protect you from inhaling any of the toxic / poisonous spores that disperse as you clean the black mold, and the gloves will be handy for protecting your hands from the chlorine bleach as well as the mold. Once you have your protective gear on, you're ready to get started with the mold removal.

You should fill a bucket with a gallon of water, and a cup of chlorine bleach. You will use this once you have cleared the area of the mold. This will be the final step and is used to kill any of the remaining bacteria (parts that are too small for the human eye to see).

To get started, dampen the mold growth with water – this will stop a lot of the spores from becoming airborne when you start scrubbing at the mold. Once it's damp, use soap and a hard brush to scrub away the mold, do this until the entire black mold growth has been removed and then wipe the area clean with water.

With the mold gone and the area wiped down, you can apply and clean the area with your chlorine bleach solution to remove any of the black mold particles that may remain. Once complete, dry down the area, ensure it is completely dry and then circulate some air in the room (leave windows or doors open to let the air circulate) for a few hours.

If the removal went well then you should no longer have a problem with black mold, good job! Remember that black mold thrives in dark and wet areas where there is no air circulating, so try to eliminate any areas like that in your home.
