We are living in an age where fuel prices are soaring and people are greatly concerned about the amount of money spent on fuel. Keeping with the sentiments of the time, vehicle fuel efficiency has garnered a lot of attention; a factor which was easily dismissed in favor of better designs and top of the line accessories till yesterday has now become a crucial constraint when buying vehicles.

Just visit an auto show and check out how all the companies are touting their fuel efficiency benefits. If you need a truck that offer help in the current fuel economy, here are a few ways you can separate the top picks from the gas guzzlers.

2009 Ford Ranger Pickup 2WD: With a city mileage of 21 and a highway mileage of 27; this is one of the most fuel efficient small pick ups in the market today. The GMC Canyon is equipped with curtain 1st and 2nd row airbags along with StabiliTrack stability control.

The 2009 Silverado from Chevrolet offers a 15 Hybrid 2WD. This half ton 5-seater comes with 4 doors and 4 trims. You can get a range from 1HY 4x2 to a 2HY 4x4. It's definitely known for its' fuel efficiency, even though it comes in a 1HY 4x2, 8-cylinder, 6L engine. Your mileage around town can reach 21mpg, while highway miles are 22mpg. If you purchase the 2HY 4x4 you will get the same type of mileage benefits, but with automatic transmission.

The safety features of the vehicle include overhead and side seat mounted airbags, 4-wheel ABS anti lock brakes and Proactive Roll Avoidance Stability control.

The GMC Sierra is another fuel efficient option. This is especially true for the 2010 1500 Hybrid that offers a 3HA 4x2 to 3HB 4x4. The cost effective rates are fantastic for this 4-door, 5-seater, and comes in both a manual and automatic transmission. Mileage wise you're looking at 22mpg on the highway, and 21mpg in the city. If you do want a 5-speed automatic transmission, you will have to go with the 3HA 4x2.

Safety wise you get a driveline traction control, side seat and overhead mounted airbags, as well as ABS. Overall the GMC Sierra is considered the "Best Overall Value of the Year" when it comes to a full-size pickup.

2010 Chevy Avalanche 1500: If you want power then you will be extremely happy with the 2010 Chevy Avalanche 1500 (8cyl, 5.3L) Manual and automatic transmissions are both available, as well as six different trim options. Unfortunately you only receive 16mpg in the city and 21mpg on the highway. The good news is the safety features are plentiful, and something we recommend viewing. In the end, most vehicle manufacturers want to increase their overall fuel efficiency.

The majority of the vehicle manufacturers out there are looking to increase fuel efficiency. Then again, there are plenty of gas guzzlers out there as well. If you want to stay away from the vehicles that don't plan on changing anytime soon is the 2009 Hummer, the Nissan Titan, and the Toyota Tundra. All of them offer 12-13mpg in the city.
