How to Negotiate Medical Bills Upfront
- 1). Be polite and calm when speaking with medical professionals about negotiating your medical bills. Be rational and logical to protect yourself and your money. This is a business transaction just like getting your car fixed.
- 2). Speak to your doctor or other medical professional before they provide any services. Discuss your situation with the doctor to let them know you have to pay for their services out of pocket.
- 3). Offer to pay cash upfront for the medical services, if possible. This option allows you to know exactly what the final bill will be and provides the doctor with a guarantee of payment. Doctors will not have to wait for payment or wonder if they will even be paid, and if so, when.
- 4). Ask what the health insurance rates are. If you have no health insurance whatsoever, use this option.
The quotes given to the patient for health services do not match what health insurance companies actually pay. Find out what the doctor receives from the health insurance company and offer to pay that directly to the doctor. - 5). Make a counteroffer if the insurance company or medical professional won't reduce the medical bill enough to your liking. Meet them half way or another figure you are more comfortable with. Remember that they want to be paid now, not six months or a year down the road, if ever.
