When you leave for work in the morning you are all charged up and ready to go.
But when lunch time comes you are already tired out.
Sounds familiar?  You might be having what is often called afternoon tiredness.
This is a common problem especially for those who work in a desk-bound type of work in an office setting or even from home.
The purpose of this article is to examine the possible causes of this form of tiredness and fatigue and the measures that you can take to overcome it.
When the afternoon tiredness persists the first thing that you can do for yourself is to consult your doctor to rule out all medical conditions as a possible cause of your tiredness.
Sometimes, the problem might simply be due to a deficiency in iron (anaemia), a case more common amongst women.
Certain types of medications can also cause afternoon tiredness such as anxiety pills.
If you are on medication, again check it with your doctor.
A second possible cause is having a large meal for lunch.
This is because the energy in your body is focused and diverted toward the digestion of the food.
This also explains the lethargy and daytime sleepiness you face after having lunch.
So, a simple solution would be to eat your meals in smaller portions.
You can start with having a good breakfast comprising wholemeal, yoghurt and fruits like bananas.
But avoid having coffee, for caffeine has a tendency to retard the absorption of iron and thus worsen your tiredness.
A third possible cause is in the area of your sleep.
If are having problem sleeping at night or suffer from some form of sleep disorders then naturally you will feel tired because you are not properly rested.
You have to try to set up a routine of getting to bed at the same time every night  and also improve the quality of your sleep.
A common practice for those suffering from afternoon tiredness is to take a nap after lunch but some sleep experts have warned against it since it might make it more difficult for you to sleep at night.
