More than ten percent of women who are pregnant deliver their babies even before they reach the full term. This is also known as forty – week pregnancy. Premature infants delivered before the 37th week has a higher risk for birth injuries including cerebral palsy. At least 1/3 of children diagnosed with cerebral palsy are premature babies. Cerebral palsy (CP) is a disturbing movement disorder that usually manifests among infants and young children. This is often characterized by impaired vision, learning disorders and children affected with CP may show signs of stiffness as well as some form of rigidity when moving. Other symptoms may also show abnormality in muscle tone and development, seizures, cognitive impairment, and speech problems.

A majority of cerebral palsy cases often happen with the damage occurring to the cerebrum, which is basically the part of the brain that is responsible for facilitating and controlling motor skills, cognition, and sensory functions. The injury itself can happen during the birth or after labor. The damage to the cerebrum often happens due to the lack of oxygen usually associated with the umbilical cord, eclampsia or uterine rupture. But experts believe that cerebral palsy can be prevented when certain steps are followed during labor. The prescription of Epsom Salt or Magnesium Sulfate is often used to treat women who acquire seizures while they are pregnant. Research has proven the fact that Epsom Salt can help reduce the risk of getting cerebral palsy when it is administered during premature labor.

The intravenous administration of Epsom salt or magnesium sulfate during premature labor can help lower the risk of infants developing cerebral palsy with a success rate of fifty percent at least. In the management of high risk pregnancies, this is one of the most promising developments that finally provided moms who are due prematurely to help save their babies from developing a CP condition. When such instances are avoided during labor, there is a big possibility that the child will be safe from developing cerebral palsy or acquiring it during the puberty period. At least one third of every cases of cerebral palsy are associated with damage to the brain that usually happens during labor.

And to further reduce the risk of cerebral palsy during labor, it is also suggested to avoid using antibiotics, especially during premature labor. According to the medical study conducted by Oxford University Researchers, the antibiotics given during premature labor increases the risk of the infant in developing cerebral palsy. In 2001, the largest research and study about premature labor known as ORACLE reported that the antibiotic erythromycin can help reduce the negative effects of premature labor; particularly in cases where in the mother's water is already broken.

Cerebral palsy can be prevented by mothers and doctors alike by learning the things they need to do during labor. Even premature birth can be spared from contracting such a condition by following the recommendation of medical studies and clinical research performed for this particular subject.
