How do I Compare Various National Health Plans?

    • 1). Ask the benefits administrator at your primary employer for information on any employer sponsored health insurance plans for which you qualify. Gather plan information for all available options including data on monthly plan costs, co-pay amounts, maximum benefits, minimum and maximum deductible amounts and pre-existing condition clauses. Start a file with this information to use to compare against other health insurance plans.

    • 2). Gather information for health insurance plans that you are eligible to enroll in based on your economic situation, geographic location and medical condition. Ask state and local government agencies about health insurance plans available for those in your income range. Compile a list with the same data gathered in step one.

    • 3). Ask your primary care physician's office which insurance plans they are under contract to accept "in-network" fees, as well as other insurance providers which they accept. Write down the names of all plans mentioned. Add this information to the lists of potential health insurance plans you have compiled.

    • 4). Contact all potential insurance companies and ask for a list of exclusions such as pre-existing conditions that are relevant to their plan. Ask for information regarding monthly plan premiums, maximum allowances and co-pay amounts. Write all of this information down. Keep separate files for each plan to make it easier to compare them.

    • 5). Compare plans to determine which one is the most financially feasible for you. Take in to account any pre-existing conditions that you or your dependents may have. Determine which national health plans fit your needs best based on the input you gathered.

    • 6). Enroll in the plan best suited for you. Do not discard information on the other plans until after you are sure you have been accepted in to the plan and your coverage has officially started. Repeat the entire vetting process once per year before you renew any existing policy as rates and plan parameters are subject to changes and modifications.
