How to Adjust a Barometer for Elevation
- 1). Ensure that your barometer is designed for your elevation; if the barometer design range differs from your altitude by more than 3,000 feet, your readings will be inaccurate no matter how you calibrate it.
- 2). Determine the air pressure at sea level by watching a local weather forecast; weather reports will have already converted local air pressure into its sea level equivalent.
- 3). Adjust the barometer to match the air pressure at sea level by raising or lowering the mercury reservoir (in mercury barometers) or using a small screwdriver to adjust the hands on the dial (of aneroid barometers) to the appropriate measurement.
