How Can I Treat a Cloudy Swimming Pool With Muriatic?
- 1). Use the pool water test kit to confirm the pool's pH. If using pool strips, stick the strip in the water and pull it out. Compare the color of the strip to the color chart. If using the tube kit, stick the tube 6 inches into the water and scoop up enough so the water is at the fill line. Empty any water over the fill line. Add the pH solution to the water in the tube. Shake and compare the color of the water to the color chart.
- 2). Mix up a batch of muriatic acid using the plastic bucket. Remember that acid is always added to the water and don't add water to the acid. Fill the bucket with 10 parts water for each part muriatic acid. Wear goggles and gloves to mix and pour the muriatic acid.
- 3). Add the correct amount of muriatic acid to the bucket of water. Add 1 1/4 oz. of muriatic acid per 1,000 gallons of water if the reading is between 7.6 and 7.8. If the pH reading is between 7.8 and 8.0, add 1 1/2 oz. per 1,000 gallons of water. If the pH is 8.0 to 8.4, add 2 1/2 oz. per 1,000 gallons of water. If the pH is over 8.4, add 3 oz. per 1,000 gallons of water.
- 4). Start pouring the muriatic acid mixture at the beginning of the deep end. Walk around the deep end pouring the solution as far into the pool as you can reach while trying to keep the solution off the pool walls and deck.
- 5). Turn on the pool pump to filter the water for at least six hours. Wait until the next day and recheck the water pH. Adjust if necessary. Assuming the pH is good, resume swimming.
