    Starting a plumbing company

    • 1). Contact your county government office to find out the guidelines and requirements for forming a plumbing company in your state. If you're forming a plumbing company as a corporation, your plumbing business may require registration at the state level. If you're forming a plumbing company as a sole proprietor, you may only need to register your business at the county level.

    • 2). Contact your local government to find out the licensing requirements for a plumbing company in your state. Every state requires a plumbing company to have a plumbing license and some states require certifications from an apprentice program. You could also ask another local plumber, or plumbing company, about the requirements for licensing and certifications.

    • 3). Construct a business plan for your plumbing company and determine how much money you're going to need up front, to purchase plumbing tools and equipment. If you cannot afford to pay for new tools and equipment in the beginning, consider taking out a business loan for your plumbing company.

    • 4). Determine if your plumbing company is going to work on the residential or commercial end of the plumbing business. Your plumbing company can work on-call to fix leaking or broken pipes for homeowners, or install new plumbing systems for a builder on a new construction site.

    • 5). Contact insurance companies and compare quotes for liability insurance, and purchase an affordable plan for your plumbing company. If you have employees, you may also want to consider purchasing workers' compensation insurance.

    • 6). Advertise your plumbing company frequently on the Internet, using helpful free advertising sites such as Craigslist and Backpage. Invest money into a one-year Yellow Pages ad, and post some paid ads in your local newspaper.

    • 7). Create a website for your plumbing business. Purchase website publishing software to design the website yourself, or hire a web designer. Submit your website's address to the search engines and local business directories to gain exposure to new customers.
