- 1). Shop around for travel agents and car rental companies that offer prepaid vouchers. Most do, and many offer discounts for pre-paying. Travel agents are your best bet because they have agreements with more than one car rental firm and are more likely to be able to arrange for a voucher no matter what your destination. Individual car rental agencies may be limited in their offerings---they may not have a branch in the city where you're headed. Travel agents are usually more reliable in securing overseas vouchers, again at discounts.
- 2). Review your own car insurance policy. Some insurance companies offer rental car and travel benefits to their members that can save you money when you purchase your vouchers. You may be covered by your own car company's insurance, for instance, and not have to pay for rental car insurance. Take your policy, driver's license and credit card (or cash) with you when you go to rent your car.
- 3). Visit the travel agent or car rental company to fill out a rental agreement and pay for your vouchers. Some companies offer online services but, if they do, you'll need to pay by credit card. By going to an agent in person, you can pay in cash with no credit card, take your voucher to the designated car rental establishment and present your voucher for your car. Be sure to present your insurance policy if it can save you money on the rental agreement.
- 4). Read the agreement carefully before signing it. Make sure that there are no onerous provisions, such as low mileage restrictions. Get all terms, such as car type and confirmation number, in writing. Ask about any bonus discounts that might be available, such as unlimited miles, extra days or free upgrades. Membership with your bank, credit card company or insurance company may provide you with additional perks.
