How to Get Rid of Old Monitors
- 1). Avoid throwing your old monitor in the trash. Many monitors contain toxic materials such as mercury, lead and other chemicals. These materials contaminate the soil once the monitor is in a landfill.
- 2). Consider donating your old monitor. Churches and community centers may be able to put the equipment to use. This option is best if you have the whole computer setup and if the system is less than 5 years old.
- 3). Check with the manufacturer of your old computer monitor or with the manufacturer of the new computer you're purchasing to replace the old one. Many computer manufacturers will take things such as old monitors and recycle them for you. Some even take old computers of a different brand when you buy your new computer.
- 4). Check with area department and electronics stores to see if they will recycle your old monitor for you. Large chains such as Best Buy, Office Depot and Staples frequently have recycling program. Smaller electronics stores may also have a program in place.
