How to Help Plan a Road Trip
- 1). Choose a destination. For inspiration or suggestions, check out Roadtrip America. The site is included in the Resources section and provides tips and advice for planning a trip within your budget. Your local newspaper might offer a Sunday travel section with ideas.
- 2). Determine what vehicle you will drive. Make sure the vehicle is in good condition and has had the proper service, including oil changes and tuneups. Make sure to check the tires so the vehicle can handle the rigors of a road trip. Don't forget to consider the cost of gasoline for your vehicle, and how it might affect your travel budget.
- 3). Make a list of planned stops en route to the destination. Determine if you will need lodging, and how much food and gas will be used along the way.
- 4). Check a map to see where you might stop. For restaurants and hotels, call ahead to determine if reservations are needed. Many hotels offer last-minute deals for booking online as opposed to walk-in rates.
- 5). Print out maps and reservation confirmations and place them in your vehicle. Pack any additional items that might come in handy in the event of an emergency, such as a cell phone, roadside assistance kit, spare tire and jack, extra food and water.
