How to Stop Major Heartburn
- 1). Take an antacid. According to Familydoctor.org, antacids effectively "...neutralize the acid that your stomach makes" and "...give fast, short-term relief". Popular antacids can be acquired over the counter at your local drugstore.
- 2). If you have severe and persistent heartburn, see your doctor for prescription for a medication that can provide long-term relief from heartburn.
- 3). Avoid overeating, which can trigger painful heartburn. Consciously control your portions, and avoid foods that have caused your heartburn in the past.
- 4). Wait two hours before lying down after a meal. If you recline too soon after eating, there is a greater chance for the stomach acid to seep into the esophagus. Try to rest in an inclined position if necessary.
- 5). Avoid the following substances: spicy foods, fatty foods, aspirin, coffee, alcohol, citrus juice, onions, carbonated drinks and tomato products. By not consuming these foods, you can help prevent the onset of a major case of heartburn.
