May 31 of 2010 is the 23rd "World No-Tobacco Day".
And the theme of the year 2010 is "Gender and Tobacco: Concern for the Promotion Behavior for Women".
Tobacco has been prevalent in the world for more than 200 years.
However, it was not until the 20th century when people began to realize the harms of tobacco to human health.
In November, 1987, the United Nations World Health Organization suggested April 7 every year as the "World No-Tobacco Day", and it first started in 1988.
Since 1989, it has been changed to May 31.
The aim of "No-Tobacco Day" activity is to remind people that smoking is harmful to health, urge smokers around the world to give up smoking, and call on all tobacco producers, distributors, and the entire international community act together to join in the anti-smoking movement, so as to create a tobacco-free environment for all the human beings.
According to the statistics, in the 20th century, there were 1 million people died from tobacco epidemic.
Currently more than 500 million people worldwide die from various smoking-induced diseases every year, of which 60 million die from passive smoking.
WHO anticipates that by 2030, there will be more than 800 million people in the world who die from smoking directly or indirectly, and more than 80% of the deaths due to tobacco will occur in developing countries.
It has become an indisputable fact that smoking is harmful to human health.
Relative medical researches show that smoking can lead to many diseases such as cardiovascular disease, cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and so on.
It has become the world's second-leading cause of death after hypertension.
WHO also warns that nearly half of the smokers will eventually die from diseases caused by smoking.
What's more, every year, there are thousands of healthy non-smokers are affected by passive smoking.
In the world, there are about 1 billion male smokers and 250 female smokers.
A communique issued lately by WHO points out that, nowadays, as many people have realized the risks of smoking and have began to give up smoking, in order to compensate the loss, some international tobacco companies begin to turn to women in low-income countries as their new targets of market development, introducing more "light" cigarettes specially designed for women, and increase advertisement spending in this area.
Especially, they invite some beautiful women to participate in their tobacco advertising.
As a result, some young women will mistakenly believe that smoking is a fashion and is a symbol of female liberation, even mistakenly believe that smoking can lose weight.
They rarely realize that tobacco contains various harmful substances such as benzopyrene, which is a great threat to their health.
As a result, we should pay special attention to the tobacco promotion behavior for women, make great effort to control the harms of tobacco and safeguard human health together.
