Modern washing machines are more efficient than the washers of even just a few years ago. They use significantly less energy and water. They have larger capacities and are easier on our clothes. However, despite these advantages, many of our high-efficiency washing machines today can also present us with health risks that weren't prevalent with the washers that we used to use. These are the risks associated with exposure to the mold growth which these types of machines can sometimes develop. Some of the same design characteristics which allow these units to be more efficient will also encourage this mold growth under the right circumstances.

What are the Risks?

Some of the risks linked to exposure to mold spores and to the volatile organic compounds that these organisms give off are as follows.

• Increased vulnerability to colds and flus.
• Allergic reactions, ranging from mild to severe.
• Asthmatic episodes.
• Chronic sinus infection(sinusitis)

While sensitivity to mold varies from individual to individual, the following groups of people will tend to have an  increased vulnerability.

• Infants and children
• The elderly

• People with respiratory or allergy problems
• People with suppressed immune systems

What can be done?

While severe washer mold may need to be handled by a service technician, most problems can be prevented or resolved by following these suggestions.

1. Leave the door/lid ajar between uses. This will help to ventilate and dry out your washer.
2. Use warmer temperature settings whenever possible. This will allow the detergent to more effectively dissolve dirt and oils and allow them to be flushed out rather than build up in the washer.
3. For loads that aren't heavily soiled, use no more than 1 Tbsp. of detergent despite the recommended amount listed on the product's label. Use only HE detergent. This is vital since excessive detergent build-up is one of the main breeding grounds for mold in a washer.
4. Avoid liquid fabric softener. Use dryer sheets instead. Fabric softener deposits are another major breeding ground for molds and bacteria.
5. Periodically use a product designed to clean high-efficiency washers such as Affresh® washer cleaner. Once a month is generally recommended.
